As America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we offer an examination of the Constitution that followed, 11 years later. Here we present a debate between an advocate for “Originalism”, the position that the Constitution should be interpreted based on its original public meaning at the time it was adopted, versus a proponent of “Living Constitutionalism,” the belief that the Constitution’s meaning evolves over time to adapt to modern societal values and needs, without requiring formal amendments.
