Over the course of the six episodes of RISE, our series on flooding in eastern Kentucky, Associate Producer and Special Topics Reporter Chris Begley provided thought-provoking observations about human nature, the meaning of community, leadership, preparation, and the value of storytelling. Dr. Begley, an archeologist and professor at Transylvania University, is a former reporter for The Mountain Eagle newspaper in Whitesburg and grandson of Joe and Gaynell Begley, former owners of the CB Caudill Store in Blackey, KY, which was something of a community institution in its day. We asked Dr. Begley to continue offering essays about some among the various subjects covered on Eastern Standard, beginning with our series about the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists.
