James Branscome
James Branscome has been writing about Appalachia for over five decades in the New York Times and Washington Post, as well as in such local publications as the Mountain Eagle of Whitesburg, KY, and more recently on the websites of the Daily Yonder, Cardinal News, Kentucky Lantern, West Virginia Watch, and his substack. A Berea College graduate, retired senior vice president of McGraw-Hill Publications Co. and retired Managing Director of Standard and Poor’s, Branscome is from Carroll County, Virginia. He is the author of a new book, Annihilating the Hillbilly: Appalachia's Struggle Against America's Institutions, found on Amazon and all other book sites in print and digital. In these conversations, we discuss his well-informed reporting on life and conditions in the mountain region of eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee.
