Gurney Norman (above), master of the short story, and outspoken advocate for the people of Appalachian Kentucky, was raised in the Alais Coal Camp in Perry County, Kentucky, and educated at the Robinson School in nearby Blackey, Kentucky, the University of Kentucky and Stanford University. Author of the short story cycle “Kinfolk,” and the sixties hippie wanderlust chronicle “Divine Rights Trip,” Norman is being honored with a two-day festival hosted by the UK Department of English. Guests include fellow former Kentucky Poet Laureate Frank X Walker and UK Professor and preeminent scholar of the international short story, Morris Grubbs.
